What Are You Storing?

copyright 2007 Marcie Lovett

People who have too much stuff often turn to the growing self-storage industry to keep their things from overtaking their homes or offices. The Self Storage Association recently noted that the number of US households that rent a self-storage unit has increased 50% in the last 10 years. What are we storing?

If you are selling your home and need it to show better, putting your things in storage is a good idea. Likewise, if you are between homes and need a place to keep your things, self-storage units are great. However, we are seeing more and more people use storage units as a way to avoid making decisions about their excess belongings.

Out of sight is definitely out of mind for these folks. Couples who combine households, but refuse to part with duplicate items, store things and forget about them. There are also a great number of people who save things because they think they will be "worth something someday." Is the cost to rent the storage unit worth the gamble that the items will increase in value?

The cost of renting the unit monthly, combined with the emotions behind being unable to part with things, may be too high a price to pay.
