![]() ![]() THE MEANING OF LIFEThat is the question that haunts most of us, especially in these troublesome times. Reading the daily newspaper or watching the evening news telecast can be upsetting experiences for almost everyone recently. And so, that inevitably leads to our questioning the meaning of life. Why is life so diffi cult, short, long, or whatever descriptor one wishes to attach to it? Good question!? That depends upon how one regards life in this three dimensional planeHumans are spiritual beings First, we ought to consider that humans are spiritual beings enjoying an earthly experience. And, we chose it! Yes, we decided to take on this world in order to grow spiritually and that is what life’s challenges apparently are all about: How we react to them and what spiritual growth we accomplish as a result of our working through them Interestingly enough, the compassionate side of human nature in our earthly experience seems to manifest itself BIG TIME in times of tragedy. Ever think about that? What happens when there is a tragedy such as the one that struck the Indian Ocean islands during the Christmas holidays a few years back? The world community mobilized to help others in need. What happened when the city of New Orleans, Louisiana, was almost flooded out of existence in late August of 2005? The milk of human kindness flowed without stopping. Remember how the world almost stood still for the funeral of Princess Diana. Why? Probably because humans were able to relate to a generousspirited young mother who gave selfl essly of herself to help others less fortunate, particularly those suffering with dreaded diseases or those who were victims of senseless mine fields A few famous examples It seems we admire generous spirited people like Mother Theresa of Calcutta; the Polish Pope John Paul II who worked tirelessly from behind the scenes to eradicate communism from his native homeland which resulted in a cascading effect throughout the former Soviet Union; Albert Schweitzer who gave selflessly of himself in Africa. The roster of names can go on throughout time and history, but what we probably don’t realize is where do we as individuals fit into the scheme of things.
